Polaroid's Ten Year Hiatus is Over!
Can you believe it has been 10 years since the manufacturing of instant film cameras that we love and know as Polaroid!?
The Polaroid instant camera is back at last! Last week, Polaroid announced that the new OneStep 2 $99 camera will be releasing in October 2017! Technically, this new camera is not made by Polaroid because over the years Polaroid has become a well established brand with pages of patents and intellectual property. The new camera is being created by The Impossible Project, the group who recently acquired Polaroid back in May 2017.
In undertaking this camera assignment, The Impossible Project's goal was to reinvent instant film based on materials that no longer existed for a product that was no longer on the market. Edwin Land, an inventor and the cofounder of Polaroid, once said, “Don’t undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible.” Obviously Polaroid and The Impossible Project are a match made in Heaven!
A little background on the co-founders of The Impossible Project: Florian Kaps and André Bosman went in together to buy out the failing Polaroid factory in the Netherlands. They sort of took a "real leap of faith" with the goal to save the factory and reinvent instant film for Polaroids. "I don’t think you’ll find too many manufacturing companies that buy a factory and then figure out if they can make their product,” Bias says.
In regards to this new OneStep 2 camera, the camera (available in white or graphite) has a timer, a flash, and you can even charge it over USB. That's something new you couldn't do with any other Polaroid before! The camera shoots packs of 8 color or black & white film, for $16 a pack. Are you willing to pick up a lost art for $2 a shot? I guess we'll have to wait and see if Florian and André's "leap of faith" was worth it!
The camera is available for pre-order now with estimated shipping date set for October 16th!
